Part 1:
2 c. brown sugar
3 c. flour
1 c. shortening
Part 2:
1 c sour milk (can use 2 tsp. vinegar to sour)
2 eggs,1/2 tsp soda
2 tsp. baking powder
1 T. ea. cinnamon, nutmeg
1/2 tsp ea. cloves, allspice
1 c. chopped nuts
1 c. raisins

Directions:
Directions:
Combine Part 1. Take out 3/4 c. of mixture, set aside for topping.
Make well in remaining mixture. Add Part 2, mixing well.
Place in rectangular, or square baking dish, which has been greased and floured (smaller dish makes a thicker cake, takes longer to bake) Sprinkle reserved topping on cake. Bake 350 degrees, until tooth pick into top comes out clean.

A good old standard recipe at our house. I like it because ingredients I generally have. My mother-in-law, Irene Munford Griffiths made this often. She was one of those cooks who could make a meal out of almost nothing, like so many woman of her generation. They "used what they had".
