Personal Notes:
Beginning in 1963, it was a tradition in our home to take a family trip downtown during the Christmas season to see the stores and businesses decorated for Christmas. Our favorite part of the trip was to stroll through the Bank of the Southwest where the lobby was transformed into a Dickens themed Christmas setting. Bank employees were dressed in Victorian era clothes and there were various holiday themed displays set up for viewing. As you exited the bank, everyone was treated to Wassail and Gingerbread, which quickly became a favorite holiday treat for our family. We loved the Gingerbread and Wassail tradition and carried it on at home long after the bank shut down. Every year, even to this day, my family spends a day during the Christmas season baking Gingerbread Men and drinking Wassail.
It has also been a tradition in my home that every time we pulled the pan of Gingerbread men out of the oven, one would have escaped! The kids would of course go on a hunt for the missing Gingerbread man. He usually showed up in their bedroom, sleeping on their bed or playing with their favorite toy.
