Liquid Part:
1/2 c. molasses
1 egg yolk, beaten
1/2 tsp. soda in 3/4 c. boiling water
Crumbs:
3/4 c. flour
1/2 c. brown sugar
2 Tbsp. shortening
1/8 tsp. each of nutmeg, ginger, cloves
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. salt
1 9"-pie pan lined with pastry shell

Mix liquid part together and set aside.

For crumbs: Work shortening into dry ingredients.

Fill pie crust alternately with crumbs and liquid, ending with crumbs.

Bake in 350º oven for 40 minutes.

This recipe is my great-grandmother's recipe. When her daughter, my grandmother, was making it, she would send all the grandchildren out to the back porch with fly swatters to "shoo the flies."
