Ingredients:  
Put fish in container. Add 3/4 cup pickling salt per qt of water. Soak 48 hours. Drain and cover fish with vinegar. Drain - save vinegar brine.

Bring to boil and cool:
1 cup water
3 1/2 cups or a little less sugar
4 cups vinegar

Put fish in jar. Add to each jar:
2 tsp pickling spice
1/2 - 1 tsp ground clove
3 bay leaves
Add onions

Let stand 2-3 days.
