2 pkg. dry yeast, 1/2 cup warm water, 1 cup of milk, scalded, 1/2 cup sugar, 2 tsp. salt, 1/4 tsp. nutmeg, 1 tsp. grated rind of lemon, 1 tsp. vanilla, 1/4 c. shortening, 2 eggs, 2 cups flour, 1/2 cup raisins, 1/4 cup nuts or dates, 2 3/4 cups flour.

Mix yeast and warm water and set aside.

Mix all ingredients together. Add yeast, 1/2 cup raisins, 1/4 cup nuts or dates. Add 2 3/4 cups flour. Knead and set to rise. Cut into 4 parts. Shape in 3 rolls and braid the other roll. Shape into 3 braids and set on top of other. Bake at 350º until firm.

It's hard to picture this recipe as described, although other Slovenian recipes describe a Christmas bread with similar ingredients baked in a loaf pan. This slightly sweet, yeast raised raisin bread is called sarkelj in Central European countries.
