Ingredients: 1 stick butter, diced 2 c. sugar 3 Tbsp. flour Boiling water 1 Tbsp. vanilla Grated nutmeg to taste 1/2 c. bourbon whiskey

Directions: |
Directions:Put butter, sugar and flour into a small saucepan and set on the back of the stove or a very warm place to allow butter to melt. Then mix together till smooth. (If butter doesn't melt, it's fine to put it over low heat long enough to blend with the flour and sugar.) Recipe is easy to double or triple as needed.
Put on stove and gradually add just enough boiling water to make the thickness that you want and cook a few minutes till it reaches the consistency of gravy.
Then add: 1 Tbsp. vanilla, grated nutmeg to taste, and 1/2 c. bourbon whiskey.
Serve warm over bread pudding, rice pudding, cake, etc.
Sauce gets very thick when cool. Just microwave or reheat on stove.

Notes: This recipe is from my grandmother's childhood in Eighty-four, PA. She later ran a boarding house in Sugarland, TX where this was a favorite. When Grandma cooked on a wood stove, it was easy to set the pan on the back of the stove to let the butter melt. It continues to be a favorite in my family and wherever I serve it.
