Batter
1 c. brown sugar
3/4 c. shortening
2 eggs
1 3/4 c. flour
1 tsp. vanilla
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1 T hot water

Filling:
12 candy orange slices
1/2 lb. cut up dates
2 T flour
3/4 c. hot water
1/2 c. white sugar

Directions:
Directions:
Boil filling until thick. Add 11 candy orange slices, cut into 6 pieces each & eat the 12th. Set aside.
Cream sugar, shortening, & eggs. Dissolve the baking soda in the hot water. Add flour, soda, water, vanilla, & salt. Mix well. Pour 1/2 the batter in 9x13" greased & floured pan. Put date filling over the first layer & cover that with remaining batter. Use of a knife dipped in cold water makes it spread easier. Bake at 350º for 35 min. Cool 15 min. & sprinkle lightly with powdered sugar. When cool, cut into bars.
