1 cup butter or 1/2 cup butter and 1/2 cup shortening
1 cup brown sugar
1 egg yolk (can use whole egg)
2 cups flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 12 oz. bag milk chocolate chips or Hershey bars
1 cup chopped nuts

Directions:
Directions:
Mix all ingredients except chocolate and nuts. Press onto cookie sheet. Bake at 375ºF for 10 minutes. While still warm, spread chocolate chips over cookie base and return to oven; allow to melt and spread over cookie. Sprinkle with nuts. While chocolate is still warm press nuts lightly into chocolate. Cut into squares.

In the Hayes house we call them Toffee Bars and cut them about 3 in. long and 1 in. wide. It has become a traditional Christmas cookie.
