1/2 stick butter, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1 tsp. cinnamon, 1/4 tsp. nutmeg, 1/4 tsp. allspice, 3 Kieffer pears peeled cored and sliced, 3 apples (Macintosh, Granny Smith or combination) peeled cored and sliced, 1 T. cornstarch, 2 T. Poire William or other pear brandy, 1/2 vanilla, 1 tsp. salt, Granola topping (see below).

Granola Topping: 1/2 stick butter, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1 cup rolled oats, 2 T. flour, 1/4 cup pecan pieces, 1/2 tsp. salt.

Preheat oven to 375º. In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice. Add the pears and apples. Stir a couple of times. Sprinkle the cornstarch over the fruit and stir until no lumps remain. Add the salt, vanilla and Poire William and stir to combine. Spoon the mixture into individual ramekins or one large baking dish, top with the granola crust and bake until brown on top, 25-40 minutes.

Granola Topping: In a mixer, cream the butter and brown sugar, then add the remaining ingredients and mix to combine.

We may be related to a pear! Grandma Anna Kieffer Gevelinger had a long line of relatives from the Luxembourg area. John and Peter were names that were featured often in that family. Another Peter Kieffer from Europe settled in Roxborough Philadelphia. He created the Kieffer pear from Sand and Bartlett pears, to produce a blight free fruit. Although not the tastiest pear, it's good for pies and desserts.
