Cups need to be in the freezer at least 1 hr. prior to preparation. All ingred.except mint need to be chilled.
Put 3 or 4 large mint leaves in cup with 1 tsp. each of sugar and water. Crush mint well. Stir mixture and coat inside of cup in order to distribute aroma. Use only finely crushed ice. Pack ice tightly, filling cup completely. Tilt cup and gently pour bourbon in one side until top of bourbon is just visible below the ice. Garnish with a sprig of mint inserted in the hole left by pouring in the bourbon. Serve with a linen napkin. Fingers do not touch the cup. Frost should form on the cup quickly. Never sip a VA mint julep with a straw. Sip slowly to smell the mint and enjoy the bourbon.Soon enough you will reach the sugar and water chaser at the bottom.
