1/2 cup butter
2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1-1/2 cup chopped nuts
2 cups flour
2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp cinnamon
3 cup finely chopped tart apples

Rum Sauce:
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup half and half
1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup rum or rum flavoring to taste

Preheat oven to 325º. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time and beat until blended. Sift flour, measure and then sift again with baking soda, salt, nutmeg and cinnamon. Mix into egg mixture, beating just until smooth. Stir in nuts and apples. Spread in a greased 9x13-inch baking pan; bake 45 minutes or until cake springs back. For the sauce: combine sugar, butter and half and half in the top part of a double boiler and let cook over simmering water for 10 minutes. Stir in rum, then pour, while hot, over cake. Makes 12 servings.
