Personal Notes:
In 2010, Skip Powell brought three students from St. Lawrence to spend Thanksgiving with our family. Georgi from Bulgaria, Igor from Macedonia and Nofal from Palestine. It was a wonderful experience. As I thought about the meals my college kids would love to have when they came home, it occurred to me that it would be nice to have a traditional dish for our guests. Nofal was very happy to have fresh hummus and olives. For Georgi and Igor, I found this recipe for Tavce Gravce and surprised them with it. It was so rewarding as I was lifted off the ground with a hug and Igor had tears in his eyes. This was the last dish his mom prepared before he left for college and the first thing served when Georgi goes home. It is the ultimate "comfort food" in their region. It is usually served with crusty bread on the side. It is almost like a meatless stew. My family also enjoyed the dish and I thought I would record the memory here as I'm afraid time might allow me to forget the 10 days we shared with these wonderful young men.
