1 stick butter ( melt until soft)
1/2 cup sugar
2 egg yolks
1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional)

topping:
2 egg whites
1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1/2 to 3/4 cup coarsely chopped pecans

Directions:
Directions:
Cream butter and gradually add sugar, creaming together. Add egg yolks and blend well. Sift and measure flour and sift again with salt and baking powder. Work the flour mixture into egg and butter mixture. Press into bottom of 9x 13 greased pan.

Beat egg whites until peaked. Gradually add brown sugar. Continue beating. Add vanilla and fold in 1/2 cup nuts. Spread on top of other mixture and sprinkle with remaining nuts. Bake at 325º for about 20 minutes. When cool, cut into squares.
