3 c. shortening
4 c. sugar
1 c. brown sugar
4 c. dark Karo syrup
4 eggs
4 tsp. cloves
4 tsp. cinnamon
4 tsp. ground star anise
4 tsp. soda (mix in water)
4 T. hot water
2 tsp. salt
17 c. flour

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening and sugar. Beat in eggs, one at a time. Add syrup and soda mixed in hot water. Sift remaining dry ingredients. Add and stir until dough is well mixed. Chill overnight in covered container. Roll into pencil-sized ropes and cut the size of a dime. Place on greased baking sheet and bake in moderate oven (350 to 375 degrees) for 8-10 minutes, or until golden brown.

These peppernuts are softer and more spicy than what Mom used to make. These are sold by the Mennonite ladies at the autumn Arts and Crafts Fair in Hillsboro. This is a large recipe, fine for a big family, but may be cut in halves or quarters. (I normally cut in half . . . makes plenty. – deb)
