1/2 cup shortening (margarine or butter)
1/2 cup sugar
Cream together

Add:
2 cups buttermilk
2 cups quick oats
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups rye flour
2 tablespoons caramelized maple syrup

Add together, mix, and roll thin on cookie sheet. Cut into squares with a long knife. Bake for 15 minutes at 375º in a pre-heated oven.

I got this recipe from Louise Guhl (Seymour's sister). It made wonderful cracker-like hardtack. It seems like you could add seasonings to the top before baking and make a traditional appetizer-like cracker instead of hardtack. Louise always brought this to holiday dinners.
