1 1/2 cup dates, 1 1/2 cup boiling water, 2 tbsp shortening, 1 1/2 cup sugar, 1 tsp salt, 1 egg, beaten, 2 3/4 cup flour, 1 tsp baking soda, 1 tsp cream of tartar, 1 cup chopped nuts, 1/2 tsp vanilla

Wash and pit dates if necessary, Cut in quarters and pour the boiling water over them. Add shortening ,StireWhen cool, add egg. flour sifted with soda and cream of tartar, nuts and vanilla. Beat well. Turn into greased and floured pan and bake ina moderate oven 350 º for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Test. It's done when tester inserted in center comes out dry.
