2 cups oatmeal
1 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup shortening

Filling:
1 lb dates
1 cup boiling water
3/4 cup brown sugar

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350º. Blend the first 6 ingredients until crumbly. Divide into 2 parts. Pat 1/2 the mixture into the bottom of 13 X 9 X 2 pan which has been greased. Spread with date filling, then pat the rest of the dry mixture on top. Bake for 25 - 30 minutes until golden brown.

Filling:
Boil dates, water and brown sugar until filling is thick and easy to spread.
