⅔ c. soft butter or margarine
1¾ c. sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
2½ c. sifted cake flour
1¼ tsp. soda
½ tsp. salt
1¼ c. ice water
2½ (1 oz.) squares unsweetened chocolate, melted & cooled

Preheat oven 350º. Cream together butter, sugar, eggs, and vanilla until fluffy (beat 5 min. at high speed on mixer, scraping bowl occasionally to guide batter into beaters, or beat 5 minutes by hand). Blend in chocolate. Sift flour with soda and salt; add to mixture alternately with ice water; beat after each addition. Bake in waxed paper lined 9" x 1½" round pans (2) in moderate oven (350°) 30-35 min. or till done. Add your favorite frosting.

This recipe came from the Betty Crocker Cookbook. I used to make this when Kaye and Helen would come to have a slumber party with me. I thought it fascinating that the recipe called for ice water instead of oil or milk.
