½ c. shortening
1½ c. sugar
2 (1 oz.) red food coloring
2 T. cocoa
1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. vanilla
2½ c. all purpose flour
1 T. vinegar (apple)
1 tsp. baking soda

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350°. Prepare 2 (8”) round cake pans. Cream shortening with sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs and beat well. Make a paste of the food coloring and cocoa. Add creamed mixture with buttermilk and vanilla. Add flour and beat thoroughly .Combine vinegar and soda, stir by hand, into butter. Turn into two 8” wax paper lined pans. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until done when tested. Cool. Frost with Creamy White Icing.
