5 eggs, separated
1/2 cup butter
1 cup shortening
2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
Pinch salt
1 cup buttermilk
1 cup chopped nuts
1 3 1/2 oz can coconut

Directions:
Directions:
Beat egg whites until stiff and set aside. Cream butter and shortening. Add sugar and vanilla. Beat until fluffy. Add egg yolks and beat well. Sift flour, soda and salt together. Alternate adding flour mixture and buttermilk to butter mixture. Stir in nuts and coconut. Fold in egg whites. Pour into 3 greased and floured 8 or 9 inch round pans. Bake 25 minutes. Cool 10 minutes before removing from pans. Ice with cream cheese frosting. Serves 12.
