1 1/2 to 2 cups dates
1/2 cup nuts, chopped
1 cup boiling water
1 scant teaspoon baking soda
1/4 cup butter
1 egg
1 cup white sugar
1 1/4 cups flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 pint whipped cream or frosting as below

Cut dates and nuts in small pieces; each date in 3 pieces. Pour boiling water over nuts, dates, butter and soda. Add egg and beat thoroughly. Then add the rest of the ingredients. Bake at 350 degrees until center of cake is firm. Do not use a mixer. Use a 9 x 9-inch pan. The 9x13 inch pan makes a very thin cake, more like a bar cake. Serve with whipped cream or frost with a brown sugar frosting.
