1-1/2 c. boiling water
1 lb. chopped dates
1 heaping tsp. soda
3/4 c. chopped nutmeats
1-1/2 cups brown sugar
3/4 c. shortening
2 eggs
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. vanilla
3 c. flour

Directions:
Directions:
Pour 1-1/2 cups of boiling water over date,soda and nuts. Let stand until lukewarm.Cream sugar, shortening well, stir in eggs and beat well. Add date mixture----alternating with flour and date mixture. add salt and vanilla and mix well.
Bake for and hour at 350º in and oven that has been preheated.
