Ingredients:
Ingredients:
1 qt. milk
1 c. sugar
1 T flour
3 whole eggs
1 T butter
1 t. vanilla
1 t nutmeg

Directions:
Directions:
Bring milk almost to a boil in double boiler (just until small bubbles form around edges.) Stir in sugar and stir until dissolved. In small bowl beat eggs until yellow. Remove about 1/2 c of the hot milk and gradually stir into eggs (to avoid curdling). Gradually add egg mixure to hot milk, and bring custard just to a boil, stirring constantly.. Remove from stove and add butter, vanilla and nutmeg. If too thick when done, add cold milk to secure texture you want, depending on how you want to serve it. Serve in glasses or compotes. Top with whipped cream (optional).

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
Whenever our family drove to Nashville for Christmas with the Whitson grandparents, we always looked forward to opening the refrigerator and finding Granny's boiled custard. She always had a gallon jar partially full, with waxed paper over the top, and held in place by a small saucer. It was always there for us, and we always enjoyed it! I got her recipe and used it many times. (Patsy)
