"The tradition of Italian cooking is that of the matriarch. This is the cooking of grandma. She didn't waste time thinking too much about the celery. She got the best celery she could and then she dealt with it."--Mario Batali

Ingredients:
1 (13 3/4 oz.) pkg. hot roll mix
3/4 c. warm water
1 egg
2 tbsp. granulated sugar
2 tbsp. butter, melted
1/2 c. mixed candied fruits and peels
1/2 c. light raisins
1/2 tsp. ground cardamom
1 c. sifted confectioners' sugar
2 tbsp. light cream
Sliced almonds
Candied cherries

Directions:
Directions:
In a large bowl, sprinkle yeast from hot roll mix over warm water. Stir to dissolve. Add egg, granulated sugar, and butter, mixing well. Stir in fruits, raisins, the cardamom and the flour mixture from hot roll mix. Cover; let rise in warm place until doubled, about 45 minutes.
Turn out on lightly floured surface and knead 10 strokes. Shape into ball, place in greased 9-inch pie plate and flatten. Let rise until nearly doubled, about 30 minutes. Bake in 375 degree oven for 30-35 minutes. If bread begins to brown too quickly, cap with foil.
Remove from pie plate and cool on rack. Stir together the sifted confectioners' sugar and cream; drizzle on bread. Trim with a wreath of sliced almonds; top with candied cherries.
