Directions:
Directions:
In a large bowl, cream shortening, sugar and eggs together. Mix in cocoa and food coloring thoroughly, add to creamed mixture. Mix together salt, vanilla and buttermilk. Add alternately to the creamed mixture with flour. Mix the baking soda and vinegar together and fold into batter very carefully. Pour cake batter into 2 greased and floured 8" round pans or a 9x13" pan. Bake at 350º for 30 minutes or until done when tested. Let cool completely before frosting as directed.
Frosting:
In a saucepan, cook together milk and flour until thick, then chill in refrigerator until set. In a bowl, cream sugar, butter and vanilla until it's as fluffy as possible then add the cooked flour mixture. Beat until it resembles whipped cream. Frost cooled cake layers. Very good and enough for a layered cake or a 9x13" sheet cake.

Personal Notes:
I remember Grandma Daniels always making this for cousin Karen Hunley's birthday cake every December. It is very rich and yummy.
