Ingredients: 1 cup lukewarm but not hot water 3 pkg dry yeast 6 T sugar 3 1/2 cups lukewarm water 2 T salt 4 T shortening 13-15 cups flour

Directions:1. Dissolve the yeast in the 1 cup lukewarm water 2. Stir in the remaining ingredients starting with only half the flour. 3. Mix with a wooden spoon. 4. When dough can be easily handled, mix with your hands until all flour is worked in. 5. Put dough on lightly floured board to knead until smooth & elastic- it will no longer stick to the board. 6.Round up and place into a greased bowl. 7. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in warm place until doubled (about 1 1/2 hours) 8.Punch down & let rise until almost doubled again. (about 30 minutes) 9.Divide dough into four equal parts. 10. Shape each part into a loaf. 11. Let rise in warm place again. 12. Bake 375º for 35-45 minutes. 13. Take bread out of oven &remove from pans. 14. Melt butter on tops of loaves. |

Notes: Interesting note- this recipe was written on the back of a Merchants National Bank counter check. Counter checks were used in the 40's-60's at banks. You could go to the bank, get some counter checks and write out the information as well as your account number and use as personal checks. Names were not preprinted on these checks, although. Preprinted information started about late 60's-70's.
