5 1/2 cups flour
3/4 cup shortening (1/2 cup lard +1/4 cup butter)
4 egg yolks
1/2 cup sugar
2 1/2 cups PET evaporated milk luke warm
1 T salt
1/2 large cake yeast ( crumbled in 1/2 milk and add 1 T sugar)

1. Melt shortening
2. Add egg yolks- beat with mixer well add 2 cups milk and 1 cup flour beat well.
3.Add yeast & keep beating and adding flour.
4. Let raise until double
5.Put out on board- form into kolache
6. Let raise on greased pans
7. when light, press indentations in middle
8. Fill with fruit fillings
9. Let rise again
10. Bake 425º 10 minutes
11. Glaze with icing optional or Tshka

Joanna has spoken fondly of Helen Valenta's Kolaches and during the 1950's, Helen would render out duck or goose fat and use that in place of the shortening in Kolaches. Czech's did not waste anything.
