1 cup butter
1 cup buttermilk
2 cups sugar
3 egg yolks separated
Keep egg whites
2 teaspoon cream of tartar
3 cups sifted cake flour
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon baking soda dissolved in 2 tablespoons boiling water

Buttercream Frosting

1 cup Crisco shortening
2/3 cup butter
2/3 cup sugar
2 egg whites
1 teaspoon sugar
1/2 cup scalded milk

Grease and flour two 9 inch cake pans.
Beat egg whites until stiff but not dry.

Sift flour and cream of tartar together. Cream butter, sugar and egg yolks. Add dry ingredients to butter mixture, alternating with buttermilk. Add vanilla and baking soda. Fold in beaten egg whites.

Pour into cake pans and bake at 350 degrees for 50 to 60 minutes.

Frosting

Cream together Crisco and butter until light and fluffy. Gradually add sugar beating constantly. Add egg whites and vanilla and beat until well blended. Gradually add 1/2 cup scalded milk. Beat until fluffy and thick. Spread on cooled cake.
