1 15 oz. can tomatoes (tomatoes chopped into bite-size pieces)
5 Saltine crackers
1 scant Tbsp. butter or margarine
2-3 Tbsp. milk
1 rounded Tbsp. sugar
Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:
Directions:
Pour cut-up tomatoes and juice from the can into a small saucepan. Crumble Saltines into tomatoes and add butter, milk, sugar, salt and pepper. Stir. Heat. Serve hot in bowls.

Makes a nice quick dinner with poached, scrambled or baked eggs, or mac 'n' cheese.

Mary Jo says: "There are many variations on this Southern side dish. Some use white bread rather than crackers and honey rather than sugar (adding a touch of cinnamon). It is a good dish with which to experiment. This is the combination we prefer."
