2 tablespoons bacon drippings
2 large yellow onions peeled and chopped
2 medium green bell peppers, cored, seeded and chopped
1/4 pound mushrooms, wiped clean and thinly sliced
3/4 pound lean ground beef
1/4 pound lean ground pork
1 tablespoon chili powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
2 cups canned crushed tomatoes
1/2 pound small pasta shells or elbow macaroni, cooked and drained by package directions

1. Heat drippings in large heavy kettle over moderate heat 1 minute; add onions and green peppers and stir-fry until limp 3-5 minutes. Push to one side, add mushrooms and stif-fry 5 minutes.

2. Add beef and pork and stir-fry, breaking up clumps, until no longer pink - about 5 minutes. Blend in chili powder, salt and black pepper.

3. Add tomatoes and simmer, uncovered, until slightly tickened - about 45 minutes.

4. Toward end of cooking, preheat oven to 350ºF. Also coat 2 1/2 quart casserole with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.

5. Mix macaroni into kettle mixture, then transfer to casserole and bake, uncovered, stirring occasionally, until no longer soupy and flavors marry - 40-45 minutes.
