Santa Maria Tri-Tip Roast Recipe

3 tbsp garlic powder
2 tbsp onion powder
1 tbsp kosher salt
1 tbsp freshly ground pepper
2 tsp cayenne pepper
3/4 cup honey barbecue sauce (or your favorite bbq sauce)
1/2 cup red wine vinegar
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1 (2 lb) beef tri-tip roast about 1 1/2 inches thick

1. Coat a grill rack with nonstick cooking spray. Preheat grill to medium (300-350 F). In small bowl combine garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper and cayenne; rub over roast.

2. For sauce, in a medium bowl whisk together barbecue sauce, vinegar and oil. Place 1/3 cup of the sauce in a small saucepan; set aside. Reserve remaining sauce for basting.

3. Place roast on grill. Grill 6-8 minutes per side turning once. Move to indirect heat and grill 30 minutes more or to desired doneness, turning and basting with sauce every 5 minutes. Remove from grill and let stand 10 minutes.

4. Meanwhile, heat 1/3 cup reserved sauce over low heat 5 minutes or until heated through. Slice meat across the grain and serve with warmed sauce.
