1 cup cocoa
2 cups hot water or strong black hot coffee
3 cups sifted all purpose flour
1 1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp double acting baking powder
1 cup shortening (soft)
2 1/2 cups sugar
4 eggs, unbeaten
2 tsp. vanilla

Preparation: Have shortening at room temperature. Assemble all ingredients and utensils needed. Grease a deep 9x13 pan. Sprinkle generously with shortening and flour, shaking off excess. Sift flour once before measuring. Preheat oven to 350º.

Mix together 1 cup cocoa and 2 cups hot water of coffee. Stir until well blended.

Sift together 3 cups flour, 1 1/2 tsp salt, 2 tsp baking soda, 1/2 tsp baking powder.

Put into large bowl or mixmaster 1 cup shortening, 2 1/2 cup sugar, 4 eggs, 2 tsp vanilla.

Beat on No. 8 speed for 1 1/2 minutes, scraping bowl while beating. Turn to No. 3 speed. Add cocoa mixture alternating with sifted flour mixture. Scrape bowl while beating. Beat only enough to blend well about 2 1/2 minutes. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake at 350º for 50 to 55 minutes. cool and ice
