2 lbs. stewing beef
cut into one inch cubes
1/4 cup flour
1/4 tsp. thyme
1/4 tsp. marjoram or basil
1/4 tsp. celery seed
1/8 tsp. sage
1 1/4 tsp. salt
1/16 tsp. pepper
4 medium onions sliced or cut
6 medium potatoes, cut
2 medium carrots, cut
4 tsp. beef bouillon
1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
1/4 cup dry white wine
or cooking Sherry ( optional)
butter or margarine optional

Directions:

Mix flour and seasonings together. Dredge meat pieces in them. In a large casserole with a tight-fitting cover arrange in layers: half of the meat, half of the onions, half of the potatoes, and half of the carrots. Repeat. Add beef bouillon to hot water. Add Worcestershire sauce and wine (if used). Pour evenly over casserole contents. Dot with butter or margarine, if desired. Cover and bake at 325º F. for 3 hours.
