Chocolate Gobs:
2 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 c. boiling water
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp.baking powder
3/4 c. cocoa
1/2 c. shortening
4 c. flour
1 c. sour milk use 1 T lemon juice or vinegar to sour the milk
2 tsp. baking soda

Gob icing: 2 1/2 T. flour
1/2 c. milk
1/2 c. soft oleo (margarine)
1/2 c. shortening
1 tsp. vanilla
1/4 tsp. salt
powdered sugar

CHOCOLATE GOBS:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
Mix shortening, sugar, eggs, milk, water and vanilla.
Sift together baking powder, soda and cocoa.
Gradually add dry ingredients to the first mixture, beating constantly until mixed.
Drop by tablespoon on greased cookie sheet-about 2 inches apart.
Bake at 400 F. degrees for 5 minutes.
Cool before icing.

GOB ICING: Cook flour and milk together over low heat.
Stir continuously with wood spoon until thick-like paste.
Remove from heat and cool.
Cream oleo, shortening, vanilla and salt with flour mixture.
Beat in enough powdered sugar (3 to 4 cups) to make mixture thick enough to spread.
Put icing between gob cakes and wrap with plastic wrap or wax paper.

In Lancaster this dessert is known as Whoopee Pies; however, where I grew up in western Pennsylvania they are know as Gobs. They were widely available during my childhood.

Other variations found in western PA include pumpkin gobs, banana gobs and chocolate gobs with peanut butter icing
