1 T. olive oil
1/2 c. chopped onion
3 t. garlic - crushed (some for sautéing, some for the sauce)
1 can (28oz) crushed tomatoes (or fresh)
1 can (12 oz) tomato paste
2 cans (12 oz.) tomato sauce
1 t. salt
3 t. Italian Seasoning, crushed
1/4 t. ground black pepper
8 T. red wine (I use Blackstone Merlot)
3 T. sugar
1 sm. can sliced mushrooms (or fresh)
3/4 red bell pepper - chopped
3/4 green or yellow bell pepper - chopped
4 links of sausage (I use spicy turkey Italian)
1/2 - 1 lb. ground beef (I use 85% lean)

Directions:
In a large saucepan, heat olive oil until hot. Add onion, garlic, bell peppers. Then, add mushrooms and tomatoes. Saute all until tender.

In a saucepan, or 2, brown the meat and the sausage. I do them separate so I can tell when they are cooked all the way through.

Put seasoning and sauces in a large pot and stir, then add the cooked veggies, meat and sausage. I sometimes add a little more garlic. If too thick, you can add 1/4 to 1/2 c. water. You may need to add more pepper or wine if you want a little more bite! Bring to a boil, then simmer on lowest setting for a couple of hours, stirring occasionally.

I found this recipe through my sister who makes it for her husband's family every Christmas Eve. It has become a much savored tradition and even her young children love it! Perfect with a good crusty garlic bread. Bon A petit!
