"Plain fresh bread, its crust shatteringly crisp. Sweet cold butter. There is magic in the way they come together in your mouth to make a single perfect bite."--Ruth Reichl

1/2 c shortening
1 t b soda
2-2 1/2 c flour
1 1/2 t baking powder
1 t cinnamon
1 t ginger

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven @ 350º

Heat molasses to boiling. Stir in shortening and baking soda. Add flour, baking powder, spices. Mix well and chill. Roll out dough 1/8" thick--no flour needed for rolling out. Bake 350º for 8-10 minutes.
(Nana wrote that this dough was also excellent for Gingerbread houses. She included an "Ornamental Frosting"--I'm assuming this is non-edible frosting??.)
2 1/2 c powder sugar
1/4 t cream of tartar
2 egg whites
1/2 t vanilla.
Beat all ingredients until frosting holds its shape
