1/2 c. butter or margarine (room temperature)
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
2 tbsp. cocoa
1/2 (2 oz.) red food coloring
2 1/4 c. cake flour
1 tsp salt
1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp vinegar

Butter Frosting:
5 tbsp flour
1 c. milk
1 c. butter
1 c. granulated sugar
1 tsp vanilla

Cake:
Cream butter with sugar. Beat 2 eggs and vanilla. In a small bowl, blend together cocoa with red food coloring. Add to the creamed mixture and set aside. Sift together cake flour and salt. Stir in buttermilk. Combine with the creamed mixture. In another small bowl (or cup) mix baking soda and vinegar. As an extra precaution, hold this over the bowl of batter since it foams and could overflow. FOLD, DO NOT BEAT, the soda mixture into the other. Bake in two 9" round cake pans at 350º for 25-30 minutes.

Frosting:
Blend flour with milk. Cook until thick (like a white sauce) over low heat stirring constantly. Remove from hear, cover and cool. Cream together butter, sugar, and vanilla. Beat in the cooled white sauce a spoonful at a time. Cream and beat well. Frost cake when cooled.
