1 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups brown sugar
2 eggs
1/2 cup buttermilk or sour milk
1 3/4 cup flour
1 tsp soda
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp ground nutmeg
3 cups oatmeal
1 cup raisins
1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening, sugar, and eggs together till light and fluffy. Stir in buttermilk. Sift together dry ingredients. Stir into creamed mixture. Stir in oats, raisins, and nuts. Drop from tablespoon 2 inches apart on lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake in hot oven 400º about 8 minutes. (Pan convection 380º for 6 minutes). Cool slightly; remove from pan.

Variation - Use sweet milk instead of buttermilk and reduce soda to 1/2 tsp and 2 tsp baking powder.
