Notes: The pie filling recipe is my Great Grandmother Sauer's recipe. She would always make an apple pie when my Dad would come to visit. Apparently this tradition started when my Dad started dating her granddaughter.
Great Grandma would make her own pie crust and I never learned that skill. Years later while working in Marshall Field's restaurant in Milwaukee an old cook (Cathy) taught me the secret of making a store bought crust look home made; pull it out of the oven about five minutes from completion and add a tablespoon of milk and sprinkle sugar on top, then return to the oven. She was right.
