Who remembers Mix's grocery store right next door? A one-room fully-stocked grocery store, the precursor to the convenience stores to come later. Whatever it was, it was so convenient for our family. (This was way before the A&P or Kroger made it to Litchfield.) Mildred and Don Mix were proprietors and ever so generous with the McWilliams girls when Mom would ask us to go to the Mixes back door after hours (they lived behind the store!) to politely ask for milk or whatever she had run out of. We obeyed and were usually rewarded with one of Mix's penny candy--always a treat. (Julie) When I was maybe 4-5 years old, and Mom sent me Mix's to buy something, I would take Mom's wallet and just hand it over to Mildred or Don, who would take the appropriate amount of money out for me. That's trust!

Continuing on the candy theme, we never encountered an empty candy dish at Grandmother McWilliams' house. She would fill a fancy glass or crystal containers with M & M's, spice drops, candy corn (at Halloween), etc., etc. No wonder we all spent so much time at Dr. Becker's (dentist!).

And, finally, there was Mom's special combo of Spanish peanuts and M & M's she served at Bridge Club nights. It was always fun to help her set up the tables and fill little bowls with the salty chocolates--still love that combination to this day!
