"I have long believed that good food, good eating is all about risk. Whether we're talking about unpasteurized Stilton, raw oysters or working for organized crime 'associates,' food, for me, has always been an adventure."--Anthony Bourdain

Ingredients:
You can assemble this dish the night before and just put in the oven the next morning.

French Toast:

1 loaf soft white bread (or any other kind you like)
½ stick (4 T) unsalted butter, softened
2 large eggs
1 2/3 C whole milk
¼ tsp. salt
3 T sugar

Berry Sauce:

3 C mixed berries (blackberries, raspberries, blueberries)
1/3 – ½ C granulated sugar
1 T lemon juice

Directions:
Directions:
Butter a 13” x 9” glass baking dish. Figure out how many slices of bread would cover the bottom of the dish. Butter one side of each slice and arrange buttered sides up in one layer of buttered dish, squeezing them slightly to fit if necessary.

Whisk together eggs, milk and salt in a bowl until well combined and then pour evenly over bread. Refrigerate, covered, until bread has absorbed all of the liquid (at least one hour).

Bring soaked bread to room temperature.

Put a rack in the middle of the oven and preheat oven to 425 degrees. Sprinkle bread with sugar. Bake until bread is puffed and top is golden, 20 – 25 minutes. Serve immediately with maple syrup or berry sauce.

Berry Sauce

Combine 1 ½ C berries, sugar and lemon juice in a blender and puree. (To eliminate seeds, force through fine mesh sieve into a bowl.) Transfer to a serving bowl and fold in the remaining berries.
