      Ingredients:  Cake: 2/3 c. Shortening 1½ c. Sugar 1 tsp. Vanilla 2½ c. White Flour 4½ tsp. Baking Powder ½ tsp. Salt 1¼ c. Milk 4 Egg Whites, whipped (Save egg yolks for frosting) 2 (1-oz.) Unsweetened Chocolate squares, grated
  Frosting: 2 (1-oz.) Unsweetened Chocolate squares, melted ½ c. Sugar ¼ c. Water 4 saved Egg Yolks, beaten ½ c. Butter, softened 1 tsp. Vanilla 2½ c. Powdered Sugar

		Directions:		 | 
      Directions:Cake: Mix shortening and sugar together. Mix in flour, baking powder, salt, milk, and vanilla.  Beat 4 egg whites until stiff peaks form and fold into batter. Grate squares of chocolate into 1 oz. portions. In the first 9" round cake pan: spoon 1/4 of batter in pan. Then sprinkle 1 oz. of grated chocolate on the batter and swirl around with a knife.  Repeat with 1/4 of batter again and sprinkle 1 oz. of grated chocolate on top of the batter and swirl again.  Repeat the above for the second 9" round cake pan.  Bake at 350º for 30 minutes. Cool.
  Frosting: In a double boiler, add chocolate, sugar, and water. Heat and stir until smooth.  Let cool completely.   Then add lightly beaten egg yolks, butter, vanilla, and powdered sugar. Mix until creamy.     |

                Notes: Dad's favorite birthday cake. The original recipe is a two-layer 9" cake. Mom has made it in three  8" pans and baked it for a shorter time. However, the frosting recipe 'as is' will be skimpy for a 3 layer cake. 2 layers is best.
