Personal Notes:
This recipe is from my Great Grandma Brauer. I have adjusted the quantities as the original recipe made twice as many cookies! Great Grandma's recipe called for "lard or butter" and the use of "star anise". My mother used "anise oil" instead of "star anise". I have always used "anise oil". You can adjust anise oil flavoring to personal taste. Please note that "anise oil" is not the same as "anise extract".
