Directions:
Mix sugar, Karo, cream of tartar and water in a pot. Cook to boiling without stirring until it spins a good, long thread (put spoon in the mixture, pull it up, and a long thread should form from liquid to spoon). Drop into boiling syrup 4 marshmallows then turn off heat. Add boiling syrup to stiffly-beaten egg whites very slowly, beating constantly. Add vanilla. Beat until mixture gets firm. Add nuts or any candied fruits you like.

When the mixture will hold its shape, drop by teaspoonfuls onto greased cookie sheet (or wax paper) turning spoon as you pull it up to form a "kiss" shape. Cool before serving.

James Howard was a fantastic cook who shared everything and was a great friend! Do not make on a rainy day as it won't set.
