1 loaf (16 oz.) French bread, cut into 1 inch slices
9 large eggs
2 cups milk
2 cups half and half
2 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon each freshly grated nutmeg, and cinnamon

Topping:
3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) butter softened
1 1/3 cups packed light brown sugar
3 teaspoon dark corn syrup
options: 1 1/2 cups chopped pecans or raw apples

Heavily butter or spray 9x13 inch baking dish. Fill with the bread slices (dish should be completely covered and filled to the top). Mix the eggs, milk, half and half, vanilla and spices and pour over bread slices. Refrigerate covered overnight. Heat oven to 350. For topping, mix butter, brown sugar and corn syrup. Stir in pecans or apples. Spread evenly over bread slices. Bake until puffed and golden about one hour and ten minutes. Let stand 5 minutes before serving. Top with whipped cream.
