4 c flour
1/4 c sugar
1 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1 egg
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 c butter
1 1/3 c buttermilk

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350º. Mix all dry ingredients and work in butter using a knife or pastry blender.

Add milk and egg and mix slightly with buttermilk. Do not handle the mixture too much--dough will be sticky.

Put into a heavy glass pan or Pyrex bowl. Bake for 1 hour. Makes one large, or 2 small loaves.
