An elderly woman attended her church regularly, but was often ridiculed by neighbors who seldom saw the inside of a church.

"Why," said one of them, "we don't thick you can tell us what the pastor said in his sermon two weeks ago. What did he say?"

The woman put on her thinking cap, but couldn't recall one point of her pastor's sermon. Inspiration came to her, however, as she turned to the person from the clothes she was scrubbing in the tub.

"I don't try to keep the water that I wash these clothes in," she said. "It is enough that the clean water runs through them and makes my clothes clean. So it is with the worship at my church with the sermon. It runs through my mind and helps to clean and redeem it. A sermon is like the water I wash my clothes in. It's not the keeping but the washing that is important."
