Ingredients: Sweet Dough:
1 pkg active dry yeast 1/4 c warm water 1 tsp sugar 1/2 c shortening 1 c warm milk 1/2 c sugar 1 c mashed potatoes 1 egg, beaten 1 tsp salt 6 c flour
Kuchen Filling:
5 c half and half (scolded in microwave for 6 minutes) 2-1/2 c sugar 5 heaping tbsp flour 5 eggs 1 tbsp vanilla

Directions:Combine the top 3 ingredients and allow yeast to grow, and then add the remaining dough ingredients thoroughly with a mixer and then gradually add apprx. 6 c of flour to make a soft but not sticky dough. Cover and let rise in warm 190º oven for about 1/2 hour. Punch down and allow the dough to rise again for about 20 minutes. As soon as the sweet dough is mixed and rising in the oven for the first time, make the Kuchen filling so it has some time to cool.
Filling:
Add sugar mixture to scolded milk. Stir well to combine. Cook in microwave on high for appx. 15 minutes, stopping to stir every 3 minutes. Mixture will be of pudding consistency when cooked. Add vanilla when cooked and stir. Set aside to cool. Drain canned fruit of your choice or allow frozen fruits to thaw in a strainer. When the sweet dough is ready, turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead lightly a few times. Cut dough into 6-7 lumps and place each piece in a lightly greased pie plate. press dough out gently with fingers and form a crust in pans. Arrange fruit on top and add a sprinkle if cinnamon.
Bake at 325-350º for 20-25 minutes until the dough is golden brown and the custard is set. Serve warm or cold. |
