Sunflower seed head
salt
1 tsp butter or margarine
3 tbsp of salt
qt. of water

Directions:
Cut the stems off when sunflower seeds are ripe, before they fall out or birds eat them. Then hang them upside down in a cool, airy place to dry for two to three weeks. Shell the seeds and spread them on a cookie sheet and place in a 300º oven for 10 to 15 minutes. Stir them frequently. When they are toasted, stir in one tsp of butter or margarine per cup of seeds and sprinkle with salt. Then drain on paper towels. If you want salted seeds, let them soak in a salt solution for a couple of hours before toasting. This solution can be made dissolving 3 tbsp of salt in 1 qt. of water.
