1/2 c. shortening
2 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
2 c. flour
2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tsp. baking soda
6 Tbsp. cold water
4 c. diced raw apples
1/2 c. chopped nuts, if desired
1/2 tsp. nutmeg, if desired

CARAMEL SAUCE
1/2 c. water
1 Tbsp. cornstarch
2 Tbsp. butter
1/2 c. brown sugar
Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs and vanilla. Sift flour, spices and baking soda together and add to creamed mixture. Add water, apples, and nuts. Grease and flour a 9x13" pan. Pour cake mixture into pan and bake at 325º for 1 hour.

Caramel Sauce: Mix water and cornstarch. Add brown sugar and melted butter. Mix and boil until thickened, stirring continually.
